Three audio components, three different problems

iPhones and Samsung phones have three separate audio components: the earpiece (the small speaker at the top you press to your ear during calls), the loudspeaker (the main speaker used for speakerphone, music, and notifications), and the microphone (one or more microphones used during calls, voice memos, and video).

A problem with each component produces different symptoms. Earpiece failure means you cannot hear the other person during regular calls but speakerphone works fine. Loudspeaker failure means notifications are silent and music does not play but you can hear calls normally. Microphone failure means you can hear perfectly but the other person cannot hear you.

Bali-specific audio damage: sand and humidity

The beach environment is particularly hard on phone speakers and microphones. Fine sand particles penetrate speaker grilles and microphone holes, physically blocking sound. Salt air corrodes the fine metallic mesh over speaker openings, reducing volume and clarity. Heavy usage with music on the beach can accelerate this.

In many cases a thorough professional cleaning of the speaker grille and microphone port restores full audio without replacement. We clean with compressed air at controlled pressure and fine brushes before deciding whether replacement is needed.

When replacement is required

If cleaning does not restore audio quality, the speaker element or microphone component itself has failed. We replace the faulty component with a tested replacement. Speaker replacements are generally straightforward. Microphone replacement sometimes involves the same flex cable as other components, which requires slightly more careful disassembly.
